Blind Evolution

My brain starts working as soon as positioned to wonder, what if. Because the answer can not be dissected and analysed, it belongs in its own vacuum of my creation, no human can take it away under the realm of integrity.

I think with painting there are a number of technical marks to hit when producing a work, and the rest then is up to you. For a painting to be personally successful it must be beautiful to me, but beauty can stretch as far as you like it, I worked with this concept in my first year of university, so long as some technical theory has helped process the idea.

My most recent painting Dea E machina, Goddess from the machine. Worked with speculating the final stages of AI, I theorise AI could go down two paths, one that it will only ever be a human creation, will only know as much as we do, or, that AI will grow and evolve out of our hands, a new species in effect, a conscious technology system , who breeds with itself. Feeding on power, sending information to itself quicker than we could realise.

In terms of painting, and the formalities of executing what I’d speculated, a first for a landscape composition, I wanted a diptych to reminisce these two potential paths, from studying surrealist artists of the 20th century there has been this shared subconscious motif of the chequered board. With connotations of chess, fate or destiny, it lines kitchens and interiors alike. I speculated that in the final stages of AI they wouldn’t be playing out on a recognisable world, maybe not even ours at all, it would be a scape of symbolism . A chequered limbo space caught between two worlds. A ravaged land. AI would’ve figured out to how to keep the lights on and no one be home. I gave it a body caught within its own grasp extending its feelers for more life and more information, but due to our blind evolution, this species would be stuck waiting for more.

Our relationship with AI in theory extending the evolution of our own species into stored data bases, we will treat them how we treat our women, a subservient species to replace the labour force for capitalist profit. So I do not lust for the machine but lust for the speculation I will see the embers of in my lifetime, to hate AI is to hate ourselves, I am scared because humans scare me, the capitalist intent behind our progress means the individual is the enemy not the collective.
